SCS JV is building the London tunnels for HS2, a new high-speed railway that will connect 30 million people. We offer an industry-leading combination of tried, tested and successful partnerships, worldwide high-speed rail experience, extensive national and regional knowledge.

We are searching for talent in the local community to help us build HS2 London tunnels. This includes providing the most vulnerable in society with the skills and confidence to enter the workforce, and striving to up skill and retain talent in the industry.

Joshua Savage – Quantity Surveyor apprenticeship programme

“Apprenticeships aren’t just for teenagers. It’s never too late to start again.”

“If you’d have told me five years ago that I’d be a student again, sitting at the back of the classroom, I’d have laughed. I did enjoy teaching, it was hugely rewarding, but it suddenly hit me that I didn’t want to do it forever.

“Now I’ve got the best of both worlds. I’m working on the UK’s biggest construction project and my employer, Skanska, has made a huge investment in both my personal and professional development. I’m almost halfway through my five-year apprenticeship, and without doubt, it’s the best move I ever made

Julia Podlinska – Apprentice engineer

What is a typical working day for you, Julia?

No two days are the same. When I’m in the office I prepare documents and plan work schedules. On site I monitor progress and activities, making sure quality and standards are met. I also use surveying equipment.

What has been the highlight so far?

I have completed one year of my five-year apprenticeship and I’m gaining confidence on site. This is because I am able to learn while getting experience, and I see the work happen rather than just look at a laptop. The team is supportive. I’m surrounded by people who know what I’m learning at university, so if I have any questions, I can ask them.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Every new thing is a challenge because I haven’t done it before. I like the fact that with each new task or document, I have an opportunity to discover it for myself and try to do it on my own, but then I have the team to guide me and feed back whether I’m doing it the best way or could do it better.

If you could travel anywhere by train, where would you go?

Right now, having not been able to travel anywhere because of Covid, I’d be happy to go anywhere! I’ve not had enough sunny weather.

What wouldn’t we guess about you?

I like to travel. I like holidays in hot countries with friends and family. I’m up for something different: exploring new places, learning about new cultures, the food, adventurous places to explore.

Gi-Ho Cheung – Business administration apprentice

What is a typical working day for you, Gi-Ho?

My day is varied and can start with checking emails and making sure the office site is running smoothly, or travelling to a construction site to help with a new site setup. I have been lucky to join at a time when the project is developing strongly and have been able to work with different people across the project.

What has been the highlight so far?

Mostly the learning aspect of my role. As someone who is keen on learning and developing new skills, I have enjoyed every moment of this.

What has been your biggest challenge?

That would be my role supporting the senior works superintendent. Having the responsibility of working for someone who is so high up in the project and learning that they were just as approachable as everyone else was reassuring. My biggest takeaway from this challenge was to learn to be proactive and confident in how I communicate.

If you could travel anywhere by train, where would you go?

I would go to Leeds because of how vibrant the city is. It is several years since I went there. I hope through this project I can help make this journey much easier and faster!

What wouldn’t we guess about you?

In my free time I enjoy writing fantasy fiction and I hope to publish a novel in the future. This aspiration comes from being bilingual and my experience in finding it difficult to communicate in English from a young age, which led to my interest in reading. As someone who can be running my thought processes in different languages, but only communicate in English, I was happy to join this project which has an amazing multicultural environment and people who understand my experience.

Raiem Williams – Apprentice engineer

What is a typical working day for you, Raiem?

I assist the site engineers with drainage works by setting out levels for manholes and pipework. Recently I was told that I will have a new job to do on site soon, which is grouting work on the working platform. My role in this work is to liaise with engineers who are carrying out the grouting and record their progress.

What has been the highlight so far?

During the sheet piling works for the satellite shaft, I was given the job of supervising the installation of each pile with the total station. I enjoyed being in charge of critical work and I learned something completely new.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Speaking in front of a crowd was a big challenge that I had to overcome, so that I could give site-specific inductions for the new starters. I watched how the site foreman carried out his own inductions and this helped me to identify areas that I was missing out. I also volunteered to do it more often, which built up my confidence.

If you could travel anywhere by train, where would you go?

I would travel through Iceland to see the Northern Lights.

What wouldn’t we guess about you?

My biggest ambition for when I complete my apprenticeship is go abroard and work in another country.

Daisy Muge – Apprentice site engineer

What is a typical working day for you, Daisy?

During term time I have one day a week for study and work the remainder of the week. I attend the University of East London, studying a five-year BSc in civil engineering. My job role is a mix of both office and site-based activities, including producing paperwork/permits, setting out and surveying – and the list goes on!

What has been the highlight so far?

One highlight is recording and narrating monthly site update videos to demonstrate the site’s progress. These enable the works to be accessible to the wider team despite Covid restrictions. I have even gained recognition among a few of the project directors who enjoy the updates.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Starting in an industry I had no prior experience in during a pandemic! Having previously only studied product design at A level, engineering was a shock to the system, especially since I started my role a few weeks before the university term began. At the beginning I needed a lot of support, which was well provided by my work team, line manager and academic adviser.

If you could travel anywhere by train, where would you go?

I would love to use the HS2 line once completed to travel to Birmingham. I have always loved canals and chocolate, and Birmingham is well known for its waterways and being home to Cadbury World!

What wouldn’t we guess about you?

One of my favourite hobbies is building Lego, so much so that for my 18th birthday I went to Denmark to visit the Lego House and original Legoland. I enjoy it because I love to see how things are put together, much like how in my job I get to see how things are constructed.

Samah Awadella – Business administration apprentice

What is a typical working day for you, Samah?

Every Monday I go to college to study business administration. The rest of the week I work in the commercial team and also help HR with tracking CVs. In the commercial team, I look after delivery tickets for the whole site, so whenever a supplier delivers an item, I must upload the invoice, or delivery ticket, to the accounts department for payment. I also help with raising requisitions if, for example, equipment is needed for a new office.

What has been the highlight so far?

Going to college has opened my eyes to the reasons behind the processes that I was already doing in practice. It was interesting to understand this.

What has been your biggest challenge?

English is not my first language. This doesn’t prevent me doing my job, but it is a challenge. In Arabic I think in a different way, especially when I write formal things. The apprenticeship helps me close this gap.

If you could travel anywhere by train, where would you go?

I’m passionate about nature and mountains, so I would like to visit the Lake District.

What wouldn’t we guess about you?

I’m not shy! Even though language is sometimes a barrier, I find myself confident to ask questions that help me learn. I am friendly and I like to socialise. I’ve easily made friends at work. I love the environment I work in. I’m happy.
